BESTSELLER'S OLYMPIC HOPE SHINES AT FRENCH OPEN

BESTSELLER’s Olympic Hope 2018 Clara Tauson has announced herself on the world stage, winning the first Grand Slam match of her career.

The rising Danish tennis star stunned American 21st seed Jennifer Brady 6-4 3-6 9-7 in the first round of the French Open on Tuesday – a brilliant debut for 17-year-old Clara, who is a former world junior number one.

“It’s kind of an insane feeling, I didn’t expect it going into the match,” Clara said afterwards, according to the French Open's official website.

“She (Jennifer Brady) was in the semi-finals of the US Open, so I was just grateful to be there and just happy that I could play a girl like her on a big court. It was a dream come true, of course, and then winning the match, I don’t have any words yet. It was so great, I’ve never really experienced a match like that.”

In an intense contest, both players had match points in the lengthy final set, with Clara managing to keep her cool both when staring down defeat but also when she failed to convert four match points of her own. Eventually a big serve on her fifth match point of the match saw her advance to the second round in Paris.

Clara will face another American – Australian Open semi-finalist Danielle Collins – on Thursday.

BESTSELLER’s Olympic Hope

Hailing from Copenhagen, Clara was named BESTSELLER’s Olympic Hope 2018 at the Danish Sport Awards in January 2019.

As part of our partnership with the Danish Olympic Committee, BESTSELLER selects a young, promising Danish athlete each year as our Olympic Hope.

The winner is chosen based on a number of criteria such as sportsmanship, personality, international success, future, potential and dreams. All BESTSELLER colleagues are given the opportunity to vote for their preferred winner.

Former winners include Olympic and Paralympic medalists such as Sara Slott Petersen, Lotte Friis, Viktor Axelsen, Rikke Møller Pedersen, and Daniel Wagner Jørgensen.

The search to find BESTSELLER’s Olympic Hope 2020 will begin in October, with the winner to be announced in January.
