BESTSELLER will be playing a key role, when 1,000 global talents meet in August to co-create new breakthrough solutions to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals under the heading ‘UNLEASH’.

UNLEASH is a new global initiative that will bring together 1,000 young, talented leaders, experts, specialists and entrepreneurs each year until 2030 to innovative and collaborate on new practical solutions to solve the world’s most pressing challenges as defined by the UN’s 17 Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“As part of our involvement in ‘Aarhus 2017 – European Capital of Culture’ and in line with our company’s emphasis on both sustainability and young talents, we are proud to be partnering with UNLEASH to make this initiative come through,” says BESTSELLER Communication Manager Jesper Stubkier.

“BESTSELLER is exclusive sponsor of the theme ‘Sustainable Consumption and Production’, which is in direct link to our business, and where we hope problem-solving and breakthrough solutions will emerge in order to help solve some of the challenges in our industry,” Jesper adds.

“To tie the initiative even further to our business, we will nominate 10 of our own global talents to take part in this extraordinary opportunity. The talents will be hand-picked by selected leaders in BESTSELLER based on a number of pre-defined criteria including a desire to make a difference in the world,” he finishes.

The 2017 Innovation Lab

The first ever UNLEASH meeting will be hosted in Denmark from 13-21 August 2017, where some of the world’s most innovative minds will gather to create, innovate and collaborate on solutions.

Kick-off takes place in Copenhagen where talents are welcomed and this is followed by a week of SDG innovation challenge workshops, training, field visits and social events at a number of Folk High Schools across Denmark. It all culminates in Aarhus, where BESTSELLER will host two events and finally the UNLEASH Award Show with top VIP speakers and celebration of the talents and showcasing of the winning solutions.

Why do we need UNLEASH?

To realize the SDGs, it is estimated that the world will need to invest a staggering amount of between USD 5 trillion and 7 trillion per year – roughly 7%-10% of the global annual GDP. To put these numbers into perspective, total investment into the Apollo Space Program (1963-72) to put a man on the moon was approximately USD 150 billion at present value.

New business models are needed to ignite change. To achieve the SDGs by 2030 will require new and innovative solutions that challenge traditional business models and approaches. Many of these solutions will need to be commercially viable as well as deliver value to society.

The next generation of leaders will be critical if this is to be possible – they bring fresh perspectives, open minds, different values, tech savviness, and an appetite for disruption. Who would have thought few years back that the largest hotel chain in the world owned no rooms, the largest taxi company owned no cars, and the largest retailer owned no stores?
